Maple Leaf Rag

Composer: Scott Joplin

Publisher: Stark Music Co.

Location: St. Louis, Missouri

Copyright Year: 1899

Form: Rag

Notes: Joplin’s second published rag, it solidified his title as “King of Ragtime Writers.” It also marked the beginning of his relationship with the publisher John Stark. The featured cover design is the most common variation and is one of the most common rag sheets still available to this day. The rags advertised on this specific copy suggest it was published in 1906 or later. The second cover variation is placed at 1907 or later. The third cover is from a small format version published in the 20s. The 1926 copyright on this sheet bears Joplin’s widow’s name, Lottie Joplin. The fourth variation is an earlier edition that still bears a dedication to the Maple Leaf Club. Estimated to have been published around 1902, it also advertises Joplin’s earlier pieces and is published under Stark’s older company name, John Stark & Son.
